“Old Vine Zin” – It all Started with Macchia Mischievous
A very dear friend turned me onto a great wine made in Lodi, California: Macchia Mischievous – and I instantly fell in love with it’s full-bodied flavor. He told me it was an old vine Zinfandel. I let the wine tickle over my tongue, savoring its richly intense and bold notes, with a nose full of spicy and jammy, blackberry and dark cherry flavors. I found it so pleasing with its mild tannins and high alcohol content. Unfortunately, it’s so hard to find this particular wine in the Kansas City area, and when you can, the cost is easily over $20 per bottle (which, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t actually that bad for a really great bottle of wine!)
Being a thrifty person, I started picking up and trying other Old Vine Zinfandels from Lodi under $15; this little experiment proved to be very hit-and-miss. But it eventually brought me to ‘Gen5‘. Even though it is a screw top, it has become a “go-to bottle” for me. It’s a little lighter than most (especially Macchia), but Gen5 features excellent hints of lush and juicy black and blue berries – with a note of spice and licorice! The best part is, it’s average price is only $11 per bottle! Jackpot! Plus, it pairs well with Kansas City barbecue and nearly any pizza. But me – I tend to drink it with everything. 🙂 Give it a try and let me know what you think!
June 2016 UPDATE
I have found yet another favorite. I like it even more than the Gen5! This is the great thing about going to all the wine tasting events we do. It really is expanding my palette and knowledge. It almost makes me feel silly for posting my favorite as Gen5 now. Almost!
My new go-to is Predator. It has an adorable little ladybug on the label. They use the ladybug because it is a natural predator that feeds on insects harmful to plants. “Natural predation” is just one of the many sustainable vineyard practices that eliminates the need for synthetic pesticides. The price ranges from $11.99 – $14.99 per bottle (still economical in my book). It has great fruit-forward flavors of black cherries and raspberries, with aromas of spice, espresso, and bacon fat. It’s also a real “chewy” wine, which means the tannins are not overwhelming, and again, it pairs really well with Barbecue – but I like it on it’s own just fine!
